CATSKILL ART STUDIOS
This project presented a number of challenges, as the owner wanted to have no steps whatsoever from her adjacent home because of her difficulty walking.
In addition, the site is quite steep and is located in a watershed with several running creeks, and it required several months of negotiation with DEP to find a location on the site for the new studio, which site was necessarily located away from the house.
A connector hall is cranked away from the existing house, and is wide enough to function as an art library. The high walls of the studio provide seclusion, and are reinforced for plenty of hanging space.
Light is controlled but washes in as the sun travels across the sky. The ample balcony gives plenty of access to nature for plein air work, without the need to struggle with stairs.
